The roads in Southern California are notoriously dangerous because they’re packed with drivers. But overcrowded highways aren’t the only reason for fatal accidents.
In Michigan, a snow-covered highway set the scene for a 40-car pile-up on Thursday, December 8, 2016. At around 9:45 a.m., cars began colliding on the westbound lanes of Interstate 96 in Livingstone County, which is about an hour’s drive from Detroit.
Police identified two victims as a 69-year-old husband and 62-year-old wife from Ann Arbor, Michigan, as well as a 28-year-old man from Hollywood, Florida. There were 11 injuries reported, and several people went to the hospital for treatment. One driver had to be extricated from a vehicle as well.
Authorities closed the highway for more than 12 hours in order to investigate and clean up after the incident. They noted that slick roads caused the vehicles to slide, and white-out conditions could have made it hard for drivers to see.
On the same day, police said there were eight more minor crashes due to the poor driving conditions. They also said that, in most cases, drivers were going too fast for the snowy, icy roads on which they were driving.
And, despite the fact that Michiganders are used to driving in such conditions, police hoped that the size of the pile-up and quantity of minor crashes on the same day would remind drivers to take it easy in the snow:
“You gotta slow down and you gotta take a look at those closing distances between the cars in front of you,” said Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw.
His advice rings true whether there’s snow on the ground or not — congested roads require drivers to be aware of their speed and space at all times, too.
